For the first two years of the Norton varsity ice hockey programs’ existence they competed as an independent member of the MIAA. After qualifying for the postseason in the 2014-15 season Norton joined the Tri Valley League (TVL) in 2015-16 and have been a member of one of the most competitive D2/D3 leagues in all of Massachusetts for the past two seasons. In the 2016-17 season the Lancers fell just a few wins short of the MIAA playoffs finishing with a 7-13 record, but are adding reinforcements via a co-op with Sharon High School to go along with the largest senior class in program history.

In 2016-17, the Lancers offense was led by senior assistant captain and team MVP Jake Palin with 23 points (9 goals, 14 assists) as well as sophomore Brendan Heayden’s 22 points (8 goals, 14 assists). Fellow first liner, senior Jack Loranger, was third in scoring with 15 points (8 goals, 7 assists). During the 2016-17 campaign Palin became Norton’s all-time leading scorer with 63 career points (25 goals, 38 assists). He was also the first player in program history to be named a TVL First Team All-Star and received First Team Sun Chronicle and First Team Taunton Daily Gazette All Scholastic awards.  Heayden was named to the Taunton Daily Gazette Second Team and earned Honorable Mention from both the TVL and Sun Chronicle as did senior captain and JFK Award winner Cam Trudeau whom anchored the Lancers defense while chipping in with 9 points (4 goals, 5 assists).

The Lancers return 6 seniors for 2017-18 including co-captains Clint Gallagher 12 points (8 goals, 4 assists and a Sun Chronicle Honorable Mention), Justin Goldstein 10 points (5 goals, 5 assists and recipient of the Horizon Lancer award), two position sensation Tony Cerce (both forward and back-up goalie) and net minder Triton DosReis whom earned Sun Chronicle and Taunton Daily Gazette Honorable Mention honors for his 89% save rate and 3.37 goals against average. Seniors Evan Czazasty, 8 points (2 goals, 6 assists) and Conor Gilbert with 5 points (1 goal and 4 assists) will be counted on for key offensive contributions as well.

Other notable returnees are junior defenseman Joe Juliano, also a Sun Chronicle and Taunton Daily Gazette Honorable Mention player with 11 points (2 goals, 9 assists), junior forward Tom Whalen 9 points (3 goals, 6 assists) and sophomore forward Patrick Lorden who’s freshmen debut included 7 points (3 goals, 4 assists).
Head Coach Eric Grasso will lead a strong core of upper classmen supported by a group of returning sophomores that showed tremendous effort and improvement in their first season of varsity hockey. These players, combined with other Norton incoming freshmen and those from Sharon High School as part of the newly formed co-op between the two schools, have optimism high around the program for improving on last season and making a run at both a winning record and qualification for the state tournament.

Norton Lancers Have Solid Debut in Highly Competitive Tri Valley League
Looking to Build on 2015-16 Season

For the first two years of the Norton varsity ice hockey programs’ existence they competed as an independent member of the MIAA. After qualifying for the postseason in the 2014-15 season Norton joined the Tri Valley League (TVL) in 2015-16. The Lancers then proved pre-season predictions of a winless, last place finish wrong by posting a league record of 3-9-1 which was good enough for seventh place in the nine team TVL. Norton was 5-12-3 overall on the season.

In 2015-16, the Lancers offense was led by three forwards that achieved double digit point totals.  The team’s leading scorers were junior Jake Palin with 15 points (7 goals, 8 assists) and MVP senior co-captain and forward Bobby Trudeau with 13 points (6 goals, 7 assists). Freshman Brendan Heayden was third (4 goals, 6 assists). Trudeau was a Taunton Daily Gazette First Team All-Star while Palin was named to their Second Team. Both players as well as Heayden received Sun Chronicle All-Star Honorable Mention. Trudeau is continuing his hockey career as a member of the Rensselear Polytechnic Institute (RPI) Club Team.
Other notable contributions came from junior forward Jack Loranger (6 goals, 3 assists) and the defense anchored by junior Cam Trudeau (6 assists), and senior co-captain, JFK and Hobey Baker award winner Matt Loranger (2 goals, 2 assists). Trudeau was a Taunton Daily Gazette Second Team All-Star and all three players were named Honorable Mention Sun Chronicle All-Stars.

A trio of multi-talented Lancer sophomores contributed as both skaters and goalies. Clint Gallagher spent time playing forward and defense (4 goals, 4 assists) while also maintaining an 88.5% save percentage in three appearances as a goalie. Triton DosReis chipped in as a skater (1 goal, 1 assist) and maintained an 86.8% save percentage in goal while Tony Cerce (1 assist) led the team in net with a 91.7% save percentage and 2.47 goals against average. All three shared the prestigious Horizon Lancer Award given by the Norton Hockey Organization each season for enthusiasm, commitment and dedication to the program.

Norton has a strong group of players returning this season and a solid incoming class of freshmen. The team is optimistic about improving upon last season, making a run at a winning record and qualifying for the state tournament.

2015-16 Season and New Era in the Tri Valley League Begin!
Senior Co-Captains Bobby Trudeau and Matt Loranger will lead the Lancers returning players and incoming freshmen as they build off their first ever MIAA State Tournament berth in the 2014-15 season (click here for link to season summary) in just the second year of the program's existence. In this, our third season, new groundbreaking moments are sure to be on the horizon.
Norton welcomes a new coach and sheds their MIAA “Independent” status to take their place in the Tri Valley League (TVL) where the rest of the school’s athletic programs compete.
Head Coach Eric Grasso takes the reins as Norton makes their transition into the TVL which is one of the most competitive high school leagues in Massachusetts. Coach Grasso brings experience from his high school playing days at Mount Saint Charles Academy (RI), as an assistant coach at both the Attleboro and Walpole boy’s high school programs and most recently as the varsity head coach of the Westwood High School girl’s ice hockey team.
The TVL brings some of the top MIAA Division 2 and Division 3 programs in the Commonwealth including 2011-12 Div. 3 EMass Champion & 2012-13 Div. 3 South Sectional Champion Medway (now a Div. 2 program), 2013-14 Div. 2 State Finalist Medfield and 2014-15 Div. 2 State Champion Westwood along with strong Div. 3 programs Ashland, Bellingham, Dover-Sherborn, Holliston and Hopkinton. 2014-15 Season: Vision Accomplished!
In just the second season of our varsity program, the team built on their inaugural season of first time achievements finishing the regular season with an 8-7-4 record and advancing to the MIAA high school tournament for the first time in program history! Rallying around their "20/20 Vision" goal of obtaining the 20 points required to qualify for the playoffs, the 2014-15 season also marked the first time Norton finished the regular season with a winning record. Both results were great achievements for our players and coaches.
